The White-Breasted Nuthatch can run down a tree headfirst; he is proud of the trick and shows it off at every opportunity. He is gallant as well, shelling seeds for his lady and passing her the ready-to-eat kernels. A feeding-station favorite and true upside-down acrobat, this fun, feisty bird uses its hatchet-like beak to hack open nuts—hence the name—while remaining unafraid of humans. Originally created for the November 1954 Ford Times “Feeding Station Birds” series (with caption by E. B. White), Charley Harper’s minimal-realist interpretation captures the bird’s distinctive personality in clean geometric forms.
